 HISTORY OF SEO

A search engine is a piece of software designed to carry out web searches. They search the World Wide Web in a systematic way to find particular information. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of web traffic to a web site or a web page from search engines. SEO mainly targets unpaid traffic rather than paid traffic. One of the most popular and efficient search engines is Google.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin officially launched Google (Global Organization Of Oriented Group Language Of Earth) in 1998. Larry Page and Sergey Brin are students at Stanford University, and they invented a search engine algorithm as their college project, which is initially known as "BACKRUB" and is initially used as the subdomain of their university website, which will give the search result within 24 hrs after we search ,and the result gets through our email id . On September 11, 2001, an A1 Qaeda attack at the World Trade Center in New York brought a lot of change to the city , but it also brought a change to the Google search engine. When the attack news broke out, people sought different sources to know what was happening, but Google couldn't give an exact answer to the users' question. Google didn't give any information about the attack while users asked Google. This made Google restless, because it didn't provide any information about the world's largest building attack. The Google began to find a solution to the problem.  Google engineers pointed out the solution. The webmasters says that the websites are not crawlable

So, in order to crawl every website, Google officials decided to give webmasters guidelines on website optimization, so Google created a document that contains information about how to crawl a website and how to improve a website's quality, and Google called it the SEO Starter Guide.

The SEO Starter Guide is a 32-page document that covers some of the more common areas that webmasters may want to optimize, such as (improving title description and mega tags, URL structure, content creation, and more), and it is applicable to any site of any size or type.

Crawling, caching, and Indexing are the 3 steps that comprise the search engine's process. Crawling is the process by which Google sends its search engine bots to scan or read your website . Google took a snapshot of your website according to the last visit of the bots and stored it in a database, and this storing process is known as Caching. Indexing is a process in which the search engine organizes the data that they have collected to give us a fast response while we are searching.

Evolution of SEO

Initially, Google used content specific keywords. During the keyword meta tag concept the ranking of webpage is based on the occurrence of the keyword , so the idea of keyword meta tag was used to rank a webpages , so this kind of concept lead the webmasters to do the keyword stuffing (it is an unethical technique) which is a black hat SEO technique in which the key words are overused in the web pages. By recognizing this, Google updated its algorithm to be more link-specific. The website that receives the most links from other websites will be ranked higher. Each hyperlink counts as a recommendation vote. The fault  in this case was that the website owners began to sell the links to webmasters looking for the same. So the Google again updated its algorithm to quality link-specific. Quality link-specific  means the links must be  from a high quality trusted website or a website with high  page rank.

Page rank is an algorithm used by Google to rank webpages in their search engine results. The page rank given to a webpage is based on the quality and trust of the webpage, and it is the number one SEO factor used to determine the ranking of a webpage. It is a numerical figure that works on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the ideal score.

So, the owners with high page rank started to sell the high quality links to the webmasters. As a result of this, Google launched a new strategy known as "passing the juice". If a website with a high page rank provides a link to another website, then their page rank will decrease and it will affect their ranking in Google search. The value or equity that passes from one web page to another web page is referred to as the "Link value". Google also proposed a "nofollow" attribution, which prevents equity passing.

Google Ads vs Google AdSense

During this time, Google hesitantly made these kinds of algorithm changes because from 2003 to 2008, Google became popular and expanded into the advertising industry. The advertising platform developed by Google is known as Google Ads, initially known as Google AdWords, which helps to display advertisements on Google for business purposes. Google AdSense is a Google programme that allows website publishers in the Google Network to serve text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements that are relevant to the site's content and audience. Google manages, sorts, and maintains these advertisements.

In 2009, Google again updated the algorithm and proposed new changes like auto suggestions and content-related search, personalized search, and the ranking of the webpages based on the interactions of the users. When a user interacts with a website and spends more time on a website, the possibility of that website's ranking is very high. If a user enters a website and immediately goes to another website without spending any time on that website, then Google gives top rank to the second website, on which the user spent more time. This effect is known as pogo sticking

In 2010, social media became an important factor for the website ranking, so the ranking is based on the social media influence power, because social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Orkut are gaining popularity among internet users.
